In this paper, considering the existing location-based routing algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), a novel state parameter, energy density, is defined for each node based on the physical concept density. Energy density is designed to be positive proportion to the remaining energy of node and fall off as the square of the distance between itself and the Sink node. Accordingly, a new routing algorithm, location-based energy density routing algorithm, is proposed for WSNs.In the location-based energy density routing algorithm, any node in the network only transmits data to one of their adjacent nodes in the common transmittance radius. The adjacent node is selected by two conditions. One is that its distance to Sink node becomes smaller, the other is that its energy density is largest in the adjacent nodes that satisfy the first condition. If no node satisfies both conditions, it is judged that “void” is encountered. Under this situation, the node transmits data to the Sink node directly by far transmission in this paper.Also, the paper introduces the simulation process by using the Java language to realize the routing protocol. Simulation results in different experiment conditions show that the location-based energy density routing algorithm performs better than an improved GPSR. Furthermore, the paper explores the influence of some key parameters used in the location-based energy density routing algorithm in depth and gets the regularity of the parameters’change impacting on the performance of algorithm.Then the paper introduces an improved location-based energy density routing algorithm that is named location-based energy density routing algorithm with tree routing dealing with “void”. In the algorithm, it uses the initial breadth-first spanning tree whose root is at Sink node to deal with “void” of location-based energy density routing algorithm. Simulation results proved that the improved algorithm is better than the original algorithm in the initial stage of network.Finally, the paper makes a summary and draws the prospect of research.  Wireless sensor networks which are equipped with tiny sensor nodes consisting of sensing, data processing, and communicating components have extended the solo sensor detection to self-organized intelligent detection networks that can be positioned far from the actual phenomenon. Sensor networks represent a significant improvement over traditional sensors and enlarge the application scope and philosophical category of them.Energy constraints are the driving factors in the design of wireless sensor networks, which require low power consumption and energy efficient communication protocols. Moreover, the broadcast nature of the wireless channel and the multi-hop structure of the wireless sensor networks necessitate error control protocols to achieve reliable data transportation. Accordingly, energy efficient error control schemes should be considered in designing of sensor networks. In this thesis, the optimum error control scheme is studied based on energy efficiency analysis. The main results of this thesis are as follows:Firstly, this thesis gives a comprehensive analysis of characteristics and applications of wireless sensor networks and indicates that the necessity and importance of error control schemes in wireless sensor networks. Furthermore, related research works are summarized in the thesis.Secondly, this thesis proves that energy efficiency of ARQ technique is independent of retransmission attempts and is unchangeable with the number of retransmission. Computer simulation is presented to verify the mathematical proof.Thirdly, energy efficiency analysis of FEC is presented in this thesis. Energy efficiency of BCH code outperforms any other channel codes due to its low encoding and decoding energy consumption. The mathematical analysis for energy efficiency of FEC is presented. The result of our analysis reveals that there is an optimum FEC scheme with the largest energy efficiency for a target communication distance and packet size.Fourthly, Chase combining Hybrid ARQ is proposed to achieve adaptive error control. Chase combining HARQ is compared with ARQ and FEC in terms of energy efficiency based on different communication distances and packet lengths. To the best of our knowledge this is the first work which proposes Chase combining HARQ for wireless sensor networks.

The paper introduced an image defects detection algorithm based on gray- run length cumulation. This method attempted to utilize the information of both gray level and run- length in an image. In this approach, the gray- run length cumulation of every pixel was calculated through evaluating the differences of gray levels and run- length cumulation, and then used as threshold for segmenting the textures. Experimental results showed that it could effectively segment texture images which had different local defects, and its precision of classification was superior to that of the gray- level co- occurrence matrix and gray level- gradient co- occurrence matrix. Besides, different parts of leather have different roughness, so it is necessary to detect roughness grades to be fit for different products. The paper proposes a new very simple method to determine roughness of a surface of a leather material from its scanning electron microscopy image. The method has been used in assessment roughness of implant materials—fractal method used in nonlinear time series analysis. Last, the classification of defects is also done for the practical work.

Because of different products coming from different kinds od leather, and arranging, incising, detecting are all done on frontispiece, so classification and inspecting technical is necessary. Via calculating the wave crest and troughs statistical features on leather scanning beam, auto-identifying and classifying can be carried out.

Cross-Layer Design of Wireless Networks

People’s requirements promote the rapid growth of wireless technologies for providing anytime, anywhere ubiquitous communications. With the increasing Quality of Service (QoS) requirement of multimedia traffics, the next generation wireless communication systems are required to utilize the radio resource in a more flexible and efficient way. The idea of cross-layer design discards the idea of layered design and views separate network layers as a whole to design and optimize while providing the QoS requirement of multimedia traffics.This thesis offers several novel approaches on cross-layer design in point-to-point wireless link, end-to-end networks as well as cooperative networks. The contents of this work are listed as follows:For cross-layer design in point-to-point wireless link, we consider the problem of jointly exploiting the error-correcting capability of the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocol at the data link layer and the adaptation ability of the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme at the physical layer, in order to maximize the throughput for quality-of-service (QoS)-guaranteed traffic. The queueing behavior induced by both HARQ and AMC is analyzed with an embedded Markov chain and we derive the closed-form expressions for performance metrics such as packet loss rate, throughput and average delay. Then, we propose a cross-layer design algorithm, which can improve the system performance with the QoS constraints.For cross-layer design in end-to-end hybrid wired/wireless networks, we consider the problem of jointly optimization of AMC at the physical layer, HARQ at the data link layer and transmission control protocol (TCP) at the transport layer. First, the performances of transport, data link and physical layers are modeled by some classical models. Then, we study the interaction between transport layer, data link layer and physical layer via a fixed-point procedure.
